How deep do I dig out for patio
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.22 PM
I am laying a block paved patio area 1.7mx2.8m to site a wooden garden swing only. I intend to lay hardcore base and sharp sand. As I have little space to put removed soil what can I get away with in terms of depth for hardcore and sand?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

4" of hardcore/sub-base.
2" of sand.
All wackered down.
1" of sand to lay block paving stones on, gaps filled with kiln dried sand.
So, 4" plus 2" plus 1" plus depth of block paving stones. When properly wackered down will be about half the depth, so take out about 6" total.
If you don't have access to a wacker plate, then use a hammer and or sledge hammer to bash the aggregates down as much as you can. Use either a rubber mallet/hammer to bed block paving stones or the handle end rather than the metal head.

100mm minimum stone depth. Standard base for patios and paving
