Grooved decking - Fittings damaged wood
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.22 PM
Hi, We've just had some new decking installed and I'm not happy with the quality of some of the work. The boards appear to have been fixed with nails which has caused damage around where the fixing has been put in, with splintering of the wood. However not sure if I'm being too much of a perfectionist and this is normal. It would be great to get a second opinion. I contacted the installer who advised this is bound to happen due to it being softwood. Great to get any advice. Thanks Kay

Hi Kay
Any additional fixings to decking should be screws not nails and all holes pre drilled and countersunk so as not to spilt the wood and also so screw heads sit below the surface of the wood
Thanks
Mike

Hi the deck boards do need screwing , overtime the movement of the wood will split more with nails. Have not used nails for a lot of timber work for over 15 years nails due to these issues including splitting of the wood at the time of fitting unless pilot drilled first
Hopes this helps
