I want to tile a fireplace heath but the surface at the edges are crumbling ( i thinks its concrete)

I want to tile my fireplace heath, which is concrete but the edges are slightly crumbled and I know for tiling it needs to be flat service, can I use cement to make it level or does it need to be concrete? or can I just use tiling adhesive straight on to it. Thnaks!

Hello Daisy, you can just use tile adhesive if the edges are just crumbling a little bit, just clean up any loose debris and make sure you use Fire/Heat Resistant Tile Adhesive for the tiles.
Good luck

IF I WAS MAKING GOOD A HEARTH I MOSTLY AGREE WITH YOUR OTHER TILER
WHAT MUST HAPPEN IS DEBRIS TO BE CLEAN OFF AND P.V.A TO BE APPLIED
THEN RAPID SET ADHESIVED USED HEAT RESISTANT IF POSSIBLE BEFORE FIXING
TILES.
