Cracked grout in corner of walls
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.21 PM
Hi I had an en suite tiled about three years ago and have noticed that the grout has cracked the entire way down the corner where two walls meet. I suppose it must have been like that from when the job was done. It doesn’t particularly bother me but I’m wondering if moisture could get behind the tiles and weaken the adhesive. Thank you for any advice

If it is an internal corner the best thing to do is apply a bead of sanitary sealant the same colour as the grout, make sure the surface is dry on application.

The cracking in the grout probably wasn't from the original tiling but from movement since especially if it was on boarded walls. Any moisture getting behind would probably run downwards so it is essential that you silicone the internal angle as soon as possible with a sanitary silicone the same colour as the grout. Colour match silicone can be obtained from Topps tiles (bal range) or Screwfix (mapei range) Bob

I would check out why the grout had cracked, there might be a bit movement on the corner. Normally if the grout cracks there has been a bit movement, yes you can run a bit silicone down the corner to seal it .

Internal corners most often yet not always perform as movement joints. In other words, they absorb movements created by for example the changes in the moisture level in either direction. It was, therefore, wrong to grout the corner in the first place. I would recommend removing the grout and siliconing the corner with the same colour as the grout.
