How to smooth walls after bad plastering job?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.21 PM
The plasterer we hired has left walls with many trowel marks and rough patches, what is the best way to smooth the walls to make them good enough to paint? I tried sanding in one room but after painting there are smooth patches showing through in places. Thanks for any suggestions.

If they are not to bad you can use filler, providing you have put a miss coat (this is a watered-down coat of paint) on the plaster first. If its bad and its something you just can't live with i would advise to have them re plastered.

Only thing you can do is sand down everything as much as possible, after that you can only try using filler and fill all the bad patches left, otherwise for the best finish if that fail would be to re plasterer the wall

Hi,you would need to use a plasterers pre-grit firstly to give the walls a good key, then over skim them to achieve the perfect finish required for painting.

Best chance you have without re plastering is to buy an orbital sander with some P120 sand paper. Orbitals are ideal as they only let you sand the surface down flat so should get rid of any bad lumps and bumps, then fill out imperfections and sand again but without a re plaster it will never be perfect! Hope this helps!

Hi,
I’m using Easifill 60, re-skimm most imperfect areas and very gently sending down everything. I’m using this method for years and works like magic.
