Toilet sink drainage query

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.21 PM

Hello, I just had my toilet sink drainage pipe replaced today because the old metal one was leaking and when I tried to tighten it the whole pipe snapped off (the new one is also a metal one with a larger lower trap body). I noticed a problem after the replacement: Whenever I turn the tap on at the highest water flow, water started raising and leaking out of the overflow eye on the sink. I did a few experiments and noticed: 1. If the flow of water is low or medium, water does not raise up in the overflow and no water comes out from it. 2. If I put a bucket under the tap and run the water at maximum flow (so no water gets into the drainage), no water comes out from the overflow. The new drainage pipe was installed by someone who is not an expert in plumbing, and he said he had no idea why water is coming back out of the overflow (he also didn’t do a very good job on the pipe itself, as there are a couple of leaks at the joint points). I have used the sink for nearly 3 years, this had never previously happened with the old drainage pipe. The person who installed it is trying to say I have a blockage in there and his installation of the drainage pipe has nothing to do with the water leaking out of the overflow, but this never used to happen before the installation. Please would you be able to give me advice on why this is happening? And how can this be fixed? Thank you very much for your help. Kind Regards, Jack

you should always use a plumber to do plumbing work, and a qualified one at that, minimum nvq 2,allways ask to see proof of qualifications and insurance, get a qualified plumber to look at it.

Hi, Probably because the drainage pipe it doesn't have enough flow or the size which was using it's smaller then that's supposed to be. I don't know what pipe size is installed but the minimum size of pipe for wash hand basin should be 36mm but again depending the length of pipe to the stack , elbows used , etc .

Why metal pipe used and what is it made of If copper that sounds expensive Get a plumber in. A new waste fitting, trap and pipe would not be expensive and if not practical to renew to the drain a suitable coupling plastic to remaining metal can be obtained To answer the original question there must be a restriction to the flow as water cannot flow quickly enough to the drain it is taking the easiest path back from waste fitting to overflow

It is a good answer it's true its always best to get a qualified person to carry out the work. It's very hard to diagnose without seeing with my own eyes, but sounds like it's an inststallion problem if it's only new since work done. And getting that person back will probably not rectify it, because if he,s blaming it on something else he won't now what's wrong. So get a qualified person in. Trouble is I find in lots of cases a little knowledge is dangerous....
