Knocking through into bedroom to turn upstairs loo into small bathroom - where do you start?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.21 PM

We are hoping to knock through into an adjoining bedroom to turn our upstairs loo into a small bathroom. Our house is a 1910 mid-terrace. The upstairs loo is in a window recess above the back door and is part of the back projection. The room we want to knock through into is the back bedroom which is a decent size (12 x 9). We want to keep part of it as a small box room / bedroom. What is the first thing we need to do? Do we need a structural engineer to look at it? Do we need to get planning permission? Do we need to have plans drawn up? No idea where to start with something like this, so any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If it is a structural wall then you will need a structural engineer ,if you get some trades man to look at it they should no if it is structural, the engineer will draw up plans for you and you will have to get them passed by building control this is your local council

Having a good plan is fundamental- especially if you haven’t done this before! Talk to a local architect or architectural technician who specialises in this sort of work and can sort out structural calculations from an engineer if required and deal with any notifications and permitting with the council. I think you will need a Building Regs application for this - which is actually helpful. Your work will be inspected by a council inspector at key stages and if you pay for a decent builder your job should turn out great. Good luck!
