Our wall has been taken out - was it load bearing?!

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.38 PM

Hi, any help would be much appreciated as this is keeping me awake at night. We have a single garage attached to our house. Behind the garage was a utility - all built at the same time. The previous owners turned the garage into a spare bedroom with an en-suite. So the en-suite was on the wall of the utility. We decided to knock through combining the garage conversation, en-suite and utility into one room. When demolishing the internal wall between the en-suite and the utility, it was blockwork. Our builder hasn’t put an RSJ in. Is my ceiling going to collapse? Should we have had building regulations for this? I’m female and the builder is my best friends husband, and I just feel like I have been very naive about his skill set.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Without a visual inspection of your home, it’s incredibly difficult to determine the answer you seek. That said a structural engineer is your best starting point. Let him determine if this was load bearing or not. If it is, you will need to ensure the load above can be carried and as such, the engineer will calculate the necessary remedial work and solution. You can then retrospectively apply for building regs and his drawings and calculations will form part of that application. Sorry I can not be of more help

With out looking at the wall,I would suggest that a structural engineer be called in ,most brick of block walls tend to be load bearing. The engineer would recommend the best action to be taken, along with any drawings or planning requirements.

Hard to tell like above with out looking but by the way it looks on paper worth definitely getting this checked by a builder to be 100% sure your not at risk. SAFETY NUMBER ONE PRIORITY
