Bathroom Fitting

Full wetroom build, with stuff from various companies

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.38 PM

Hello, We are quite keen on installing a wetroom bathroom in our house. We've found individual items we like over on sites like victoriaplumbing/ikea for example, and also some nice tiles from another store - so none of the stuff comes from one place. With that in mind, who would put all of this together for us? Everything from underfloor heating, plumbing the bathroom, tiling etc? Because we're buying things from different stores, a wetroom specialist store probably wouldn't do this for us would they? They'd probably want us to buy the whole package from them, but we usually don't like their styles.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I've had problems with IKEA products not being compatible with UK pipe sizes. Have had to adapt and make good. Also a bathroom suite imported from France, the parts only available from Europe. More an inconvenience than a headache.

A good freelance bathroom fitter will be able to do most of the work, with other trades such as plasterers and electricians they work along side to complete the rest. But you really need to see a decent photograph portfolio to make sure you're getting someone who can do all the work involved, not just someone who says they can have a go..

You need a good plumber or tiler or carpenter who has had experience of fitting wet rooms. If like us (carpenters) we fit sinks so we have plumbing knowledge, do the odd tiling so fit tiles we now end up doing bathrooms wet rooms etc. Where you may fall down is with showers and possibly central heating. These can be specialist areas so whoever you choose will probably have to get help from a heating engineer or plumber to make sure the systems you have can deliver the experience you want. A good fitter usually has people he can call on to do this and pull the job together. Look for bathroom fitters on my builder and see what local tradesmen can do and most importantly check the reviews.

I guess the short answer is a competent installer. They shouldn’t mind installing any products. Spend time with the people so you are both happy with the proposed work and costs, ask for a written warranty for workmanship and get references to follow up from previous wet room installations. Get the installer to go over all the items you’ve planned to buy, don’t skimp on the undertray or the tanking. Use their experience to make the correct decisions after all, it’s what they do. Since you’re on mybuilder you should start there. Wet room floors aren’t rocket science, but does require someone who has previous experience in installing them, get them right and they are great, get them wrong and it’s a real problem.
