Please help!!! Laying patio over concrete and soil?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.38 PM

I would really really really appreciate some advice! We have recently removed our old decking and want to install a new patio. The entire are is about 4x 4 metres- half of this appears to be soil and small rocks which is no issue- however half of the area was old patio. We have just spent a couple of hours removing the old patio, most of it came up fine but there appears to be an area approx 3 x 1 metre where underneath the old patio is a layer of even older concrete?! It’s a good four or five inches thick. I’m thinking it might be the concrete that the old slabs were laid on but not sure. So will we also need to keep taking this up until we find a layer of soil, or is there a way to lay a new patio on top of it, my confusion being that half the area is soil and the rest is now uneven concrete. Any help gratefully received! The concrete is currently two bricks' depth below the damp course so I'm thinking we wouldn't want to raise it by more than a brick in height?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

No you should be fine leaving it there as long as it is all solid .all you have to do is to dig down around the concrete about 2 inches and cover in type 1 (scalpings )and hire an impact hammer (whacker plate) And create an even surface and then you can lay your new patio on top

What is the depth from the desired finished height to the highest part of the concrete would give a better indication for me to help you out.
