Can I put Slabs on top of solid old slabs

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.00 PM

Hi I have an old garage floor, 6” of solid concrete, on top of that there are slabs that were cemented down, they are level and solid having been down for 25 years. I am having a new patio laid that will include this area, my question is can we put the new slabs on top on a cement base.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would say the best thing to do is lay the concrete slabs have they already just screw them off with a light screen to compact everything and then you can lay your stones on top of that

It would be perfectly fine to lay new slabs ontop of original slabs (solid foundation ) . As long as the levels worked .

Lift the old slabs, and get the old cement off the concrete slab and relay new paving on a new mortar bed. Hope this helps J.A LANDSCAPES

as long as all the levels work then it shouldn't pose a problem. if you are using a rigid pointing gap, then the addition of a couple of expansion joints in the paving near to where the base material changes would be wise as long term you may experience some differences in behaviour between the different sub bases. personally i would remove the concrete base if it was dictating the level of the paving. If it was the perfect base height i would leave it in. If it was too low and needed compacted hardcore above it i would breaker a load of holes in the concrete to prevent standing water below the harcore

Sorry if this is same as other reply as did quite understand it. Would be fine to lay on top of old slabs as long as they are solid as a base!! Yes I would use a 5 /1 sand and cement ratio straight on top!!
