Advice on slate side laps in a recent repair done by a roofer on pitched roof

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.00 PM

Hi I have recently had a roofer repair. My rear terrace house slate roof has a gradient under 30° that decreases in gradient slightly half way down the roof. It is slated continuously from ridge to eaves and the slates are 11 inches wide by 22" long. At the junction where the gradient changes the course of slates is shifted, such that the gaps between tiles and the course below is only 2 inches ( 'side laps' or bond?). There were extra 1/2 length slates fitted between the two courses centred on the side laps. It is my belief there purpose was to stop driven rain getting through the narrow side laps of 2". My roofer without consulting me replaced some broken slates at this junction but threw away 4 of these 1/2 slates, such that I now have 4 side laps in that area of 2" wide. They are leaking when water hosed from above on test. Is there roofing a term for these 1/2 length slates and their use? Am I right the side laps or bond between uniform 11" wide slate tiles should not be 2" but 5-6 inches. Kind regards Declan

From my understanding from your question , i can't quite understand what you're explaining , it sounds like you have what is called a bell cast pitch , this is designed to slow rainfall a few courses above the eves , this designed because if you're roof pitch is extremely steep rainfall will cascade over the gutter , ideally there should be a lead flashing where the pitch changes in to a shallower pitch

Long story short. Slate and a half size should be put back. It sounds like it has been peaced in with smaller slates and possibly inband slate. 3" head lap is sufficient on the greater pitch, 4" head lap on the lower pitch. 2" side lap is not sufficient either.

The 1/2 slates would be tops like ones up at your ridge and also like your eaves which would not be seen at eaves though. The bell cast would be a little kick up at gutter maybe even a slight change to the pitch. The section that I think on your property which changes pitch should have 1/2 slates at top of bottom section then a lead flashing installed then go again wth slates to top with 1/2’s again at ridge hope this helps with your query and I like to other my services to solve your leaking problem
