Can you swap a wedge window gasket for a bubble gasket?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.59 PM
We bought our house last year and all of the upstairs gaskets have perished. I am looking to replace them and am wondering whether I need to match the same type of gasket already in them (wedge gasket - Purple coded on most sites), or whether I can buy a bubble gasket from somewhere like screwfix that claims to be universal?

Wedge gasket is only used to secure glass into place by compressing the beading into its retaining slot.
Bubble gasket is generally used in the window frame as a draught proofing, you will see it if you open one of the sashes up in groove around the edge where the sash closes onto.
You definitely couldn't replace a wedge gasket with a bubble gasket.

It is possible to change the Gaskets but is likely to make it very difficult to glaze and fit beads as you would need to deglaze the window prior to fitting bulb gasket !!!

A wedge gasket serves a different job than a bubble gasket. A bubble gasket is usually found on the external for the glass to compress against when you put the window beading in from the internal however when a window is externally glazed you put the wedge gasket in from the inside to push the glass against the beads to stop the beads been removed easily from outside once gasket in place. An alternative is to remove each piece of glass one at a time and put double sided glazing tape where the wedge gasket has been the peak off backing and pack glass on glazing packs should already be there push the glass firmly onto the glazing tape and refit the external beads this is just as secure as a wedge gasket as the glass will now be bonded to the frames and even if people get the beads out you still have to cut round the tape from inside in order to remove the glass.
Hope this helps.
