ELECTRICAL CERTIFICATE

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.59 PM

Dear Sir I have had a new extension built. The Builder forgot to give me an Electrical Certicate.I only noticed now after checking on the NICEIC online site. I have contacted the builder and he has said the Electrician will come round check and certify the work, but has not and will not give me a date to when he will come round. The Electrician is CERTIFIED to do the work. Should I take action for negligence?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

How did the builder ‘forget’ to give you a certificate? If he forgot then he has one in his possession, so why is he sending the electrician round to ‘check it out and certify’ ? I don’t think you will ever see him again tbh. If he is ‘certified’? I think you may mean registered, if and it’s a big if he will be registered with NICEIC, Napit etc. You could find out by ringing these organisations if he is registered with them and if he is you can ask them to get on to him. Ultimately, if the builder employed him to do your work then he is responsible for getting this stuff to you. Doubtless you have paid up for everything! Hear this tale of woe so often.

Dear Sir, Madame When an Electrical Contractor Or Electrician is making alterations to an existing circuit or is installing a new circuit it is mandatory for him to Inspect and test the new installation before becoming energize and all the problems to be rectified before issue an Electrical Installation Certificate. He has 30 days to issue and send to you an Electrical Installation Certificate together with a Building Control certificate. If the Electrician is registered NICEIC for example the Building Control Certificate will be issued automatically by NICEIC. If the Electrician is not register was mandatory for him to notify the Local Building Control with 3 days before starting the work and after work was completed was necessary a visit from the Local Authority or inspector send by them to verify that the work was done and complies to Part P and Wiring Regulations BS7671 18th Edition. Therefore, if the electrical company/person did not send you anything you need to contact him and clarify the problem. If you cannot prove the work was done by a Competent person you need to announce Building Control or a registered Electrician to Inspect the work done and to do an Electrical Installation Condition Report of the full Circuit and rectify if is anything not complies with the regulation. Please rectify and resolve the issue as soon as possible because if a fire arises you cannot make a claim from the insurance company. I hope this will answer your question!

The Part P Notification should be carried out within 21 days of works being completed. Part P is law. I feel good practice is to supply the certificate within that time frame...

Hi, As part of the initial verification of the electrical installation it should be fully tested and inspected. This is where the test values & results for the certificate comes from. If the installation comprises of one or more new circuits of a consumer unit change / install should receive an “Electrical installation certificate” which will include a schedule of inspections and a schedule of test results and should you should also get a building compliance certificate if the person is registered (you may get this through the rest of the planning application/ building regs inspector as you’re having other work done too). If the electrician has only extended or altered existing circuits from the main house (unless you have a bath / shower room in there) he should issue you with a minor works certificate. The fact that the builder is sending the electrician back suggests he hasn’t finished testing yet (if I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt) Hope this helps 👍🏻
