Electrical

Electrics to my hot tub cabin

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.59 PM

I recently had a wooden cabin installed in the garden for my hot tub. I have connected the electrics, and the room has 2 by 2 gang waterproof sockets. I have fitted an extractor fan which is connected to plug into one of the sockets using a 3 pin plug. As there is a lot of steam, I could really do with fitting a second extractor fan. Problem is, all my plugs are now in use. If I get an identical fan, can I use a connector strip to connect the two fans to run off the one plug? Thank you Elec craft Electrical Services for a response to the above part of my question advising removal of the sockets from inside the cabin. In order to make the installation safer, should I move the electrics onto the outer wall using 16amp outdoor sockets, then running the cables for the hot tub, etc in through the wall where they need to be. I currently have the power going to a 2 gang outdoor 16amp socket, and off each of these runs a 2 gang waterproof/weatherproof socket. I can continue using the werherproof sockets, or replace these with 16 amp 2 gang sockets - please advise. Thanks!!!

Hi, this type of electrical work is notifiable to your LABC so your Part P registered electrical contractor should give you all your options you need. Steve S.C. Electrical Contractors

Really I am quite concerned that you are attempting this installation without any real knowledge /understanding of the dangers or rules which are there to keep the installation safe. I dare not ask what the earthing / RCD arrangements are! To give you a flavour, there should be no sockets within 2m (horizontal) of your hot tub, which no doubt rules out being inside your cabin I expect. Hot tubs are so dangerous if there is an electrical issue which does not automatically cut the power. It could easily be 'game over' for you and/or your loved ones !

Garden buildings, especially ones that contain a hot tub, need to be correctly earthed. You don't mention how or where the supply comes from, what the protective device is, the size and type of the supply cable etc. Supplies out to garden buildings also need to be tested and registered with building control (because they are dangerous if not done correctly). My advice would be to get an electrician in to sort it out, test it all and get it signed off.
