Roofing felt and battens (Scotland)

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.59 PM

Good evening , I would appreciate advice on some aspects of my roof before I tackle/consider any works and this is for further clarity. I have bungalow 22.5° pitched roof with 9mm OSB sheets (2.4x1.2m) with bitumen felt, 38x19 battens and 38x19 counter battens finished with Marley modern tiles. The plan dimensions of roof is approx 17m long by 8m wide. Soffits are fully vented, ridge vents and some tile vents. Unfortunately I have to replace some lower sections of the felt and adjust the lap on some tiles. I would appreciate advice on : 1 - Is there benefit in having breathable roofing felt on OSB sheet. 2 - Any recommendation of roofing felt. 3 - Do the battens and counterbattens sizes seem appropriate. many thanks Campbell

There are a few different issues that concern me, as you are sheeting the roof first anything you then nail through this sheeting will create potential leek holes so by counter battening it your increasing the holes in your new felt, The batten sizes for these tiles are generally 25/50mm, by sandwiching felt between OSB board you will cause sweating creating dampness. Why do you need to board the roof first Why can't you just put felt.battens tiles. That would be the logical way to prevent sweating and allow are flow to all the timber in your roof

Yes I would also agree with the statement from ADR Property maintenance, boarding the roof first and the installing felt and batons will only cause you problems in the future. I would recommend not boarding the roof and just felt & baton then tile.
