Tiling on top of quarry tiles

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.40 PM

Hi I have a small porch (only around 1.5 sqm) that has quarry tiles on the floor. I want to replace the flooring with new tiling but not sure on the best approach. I'm reluctant to remove the quarry tiles as suspect they have been laid onto earth and ideally don't want to get into having to lay a new screed. Could I clean them up, coat with something (adhesive, liquid DPM etc) and then lay tiles on top? I read somewhere else that it may also be advisable to lay a BAL rapid mat on top of the tiles (as well at the liquid DPM) in order to have a barrier between old floor and new one. Any advice much appreciated!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi if the quarry tiles are sound and solid no movement would be fine to lay straight on top I’ve laid on them A number of times with no problem

I would cut the ply, and screw it to the floorboards, very tightly, forming a brick bond fashion, to cover the whole floor, then i would paint on a solution of neatPVA. Do not water this down. Then to make sure I would use plastering scrim, to cover all the joints on the floor. By using plastering scrim this will stop cracking of the tiles on the joints.

As the one of the tiler said no issue to tile over, put a neat SBR primer on top of existing tiles then use a flexible adhesive and flexible grout. No probs, do it all the time.

Hi, Prime the floor with a primer that’s relevant to the adhesives you’ll use- ie, if using Mapei adhesives, use their primer. Then, Fit Ditra matting- it’ll act as a moisture barrier. Stick it down with a cement based adhesive (as above). After this, carry on and tile.
