Adding external electric for outdoor shed and pergola.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.40 PM

Hi guys, i would like to seek professional advise on types of socket and cable, fused socket etc for electric i would like to run. My aim is...... I have a double socket connected to the mains direct under the stairs, i would like to add a cable from that to outside, run it to the shed and create a single or double sockets in the shed so i can use to connect lawnmower or plug diy tools etc. From that box i want to add a light with switch for shes lighting. One of the sockets i want to either run a single socket to my pergola to plug in light bulbs or just plug it in the double socket as normal. They will not be in constant use, only social use. Can someone advise me or parts i need and cable type etc and if this plan is doable without tripping the mains?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Hyderhadi, An EIC must be issued for all new electrical installations, it may also be required for an alteration or addition to an installation. Therefore, I would recommend that you use a registered electrician who will install and issue the correct certification for the work they undertake. I hope that helps.

If the double socket under stairs is part of ring circuit and has RCD protection, you can take a spur from it . This will limit the total load to 13A, which should be ok for your suggested use. But It's not a good way to do it, later on you may require more like a hot tub or other appliances and lights. So I would suggest you run a seperate supply from main board to the shed into a small ccu (fuse box) which will let you add more circuits when needed. The external cable sould be run in Steel Wired Armoured cable, size will depend on load and distance. As its an out side circuit you will need to get it installed by registered electrician. I'd advise posting a job for external socket on Mybuilder.

This isn’t something that is cost effective if you aren’t appropriately qualified. It will need full certification and building control notification (Which is not cheap if you aren’t registered) If you spend money on getting a qualified electrical contractor to do outside sockets and shed sockets. You could save money by using plug in/low voltage lighting However, as another has mentioned a neater solution is a dedicated fuseboard and fixed wiring for lighting
