Neighbour complaining about fence on MY side

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.41 PM

Hi, I’m pretty sure I know the answer here but I want some advice. I have a hedge marking the boundary and initially for privacy I wanted to remove it and install a fence In its place. I offered to foot the bill to have the hedge removed and fence but up but the neighbour wasn’t keen. At this point I told them it was my intention to trim back my side of the hedge and erect a fence on my side of the boundary. Today it was getting installed and my neighbour came out and was mouthing off at the contractors, generally rambling about the quality of the work as it isn’t as as the aesthetically pleasing from her side, complaining that the hedge wasn't removed - despite her being the one wanting it kept - and threatening to contact the council. I have agreed to have the contractor rectify the issues on her side and have checked that the fence is within the the correct height for permitted development. I don’t want to fall out with the women but as far as I understand I don’t even need to consult her regarding putting a fence up on what is clearly my side of the boundary? Any advice appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If it's definitely on your side of the line and meets all the regulations, i.e up to but no more than 2m in height or 1m of road side then you within your rights. Same goes for any over hanging hedge branches, you can trim and remove anything on you side of the line, this actually even includes the roots, however work around these where possible as could kill the bush/Tree . You are also the paying customer so you may choose to have what ever side of the fence panel you wish. I hope that helps.

If you have put the fence inside your boundaries tell her to do one is my advise. Just don’t go over 6’6” and she can’t do anything. Your entitled to put your fence up In front of hers on your land.

Hi . If it’s your side of boundaries then in all fairness it’s up to you if you want to put a fence up as long as it’s not on your neighbors side and it’s not disrupting anything in her garden then really she shouldn’t be giving a opinion.
