Drilling through pebbledash rendering

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.41 PM

I am looking to install several simple things (I.e. security cameras, lights, etc.) onto the external walls of my house. The walls have a painted pebbledash render, which is causing me two concerns: 1) Because the surface is very uneven it is difficult to accurately drill through. Is there any technique to help? 2) I’m worried once I start drilling, the render will start to crumble. Anything I can do to make sure this doesn't happen? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Make a template and drill though it, will help, use a smaller drill bit than you need, then open up the holes, go deep with the fixings, at least 20mm more than normal so you are not relying on the rendering for mechanical strength, render is very soft mix. Use Fischer fixing plugs as they are nice and soft to get a good bite, 8mm or bigger Hope that helps

Agree with the previous answer most importantly a good quality drill bit. Pilot hole each hole this means starting with a small drill bit and working your way up to the size you need. Avoid using hammer on your drill as much as possible.
