. Contractor has asked for 50% deposit in advance of them starting the job. Is this reasonable/customary?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Deposits are asked on bigger jobs some times but 50 percent is not the normal case before any work started seems unfair to ask for that much if it’s big then normally it’s a 3 to 4 payment but to start it’s normal 10 .20 percent hope this helps

Dependant on job size and client relationship for me, if anything potentially ask for materials on bigger jobs up front but never labour

I think personally that a 50% up front payment is not reasonable at all. Sometimes as a trades man you might ask for 10-20% upfront on a large contract. Very unlikely as normally paid after invoice once job is completed to customer satisfaction. Hope this helps a little.

This really depends on the size of the job and the materials required. The normal deposit asked by a reputable tradesman would be 20% prior to starting the job. Whatever you pay at the start you need this in writing in the form of a deposit invoice, which should also show the remaining balance. Once you have paid this deposit you should then be issued with a form of receipt, showing this.
Exactly the same applies if it is a larger job, with stage payments. Once each section has been completed you can then sign it off (if you are happy with the work so far) and the contractor supplies you with the same as above.
A deposit invoice should only cover the cost of any materials required to start the job, this covers the contractor for their initial outlay.
There are a lot of rogue tradesmen out there but equally can be said about clients not paying at the end of the job.
