Double pole isolator required for EV charger install

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.41 PM

Hello I have ordered an EV charge point and after ordering the electrician has advised he needs me to get a double pole isolator fitted by the meter operator before he can start work. I'm struggling to get much support from the meter operator and wondering if this is definitely normally required? The house was fully rewired and new consumer unit a few years ago and I presume then they just removed the main fuse. I realise this is technically against the rules but what else are you supposed to do? Just interested if this is what is definitely needed or would I get more help from an alternative installer?! For reference the main house fuse has been recently upgraded and hence is sealed.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Seems like an odd thing to insist on before he starts work to fit an EV charge point. If he wanted to isolate any of the circuits then the mcbs are there or turn the main switch off. Unless the meter tails are not 25mm, but these should have been upgraded when the consumer unit was changed or when the main fuse was upgraded. Other than that no idea.

It depends on which charger you having installed, there are some that can be run directly from a 32a circuit breaker or RCBO in the consumer unit, some need a stand alone supply via an isolator ,all dependant on power output. also the earthing arrangements should be considered as some require a stand alone Tt system to be installed as they cannot be connected to a PME earthing system.

An isolater is only needed if fusebox is full and you require a new fusebox to feed ev charger. So they can isolater the mains cable and branch off to feed the new fusebox. We don't know the situation. Thanks

You must get the DNO distribution network operator to install a double pole cut off switch. The fuse is the property of the DNO you must not pull the fuse, if you have a smart meter fitted, the DNO will know the fuse has been pulled and you will be charged for reconnecting.

An electritian is not allowed to pull the main fuse, This has to be done by a DNO. By installing a mains isolator will mean the electrician can safely isolate and able to carry out the work. Fauling that you can pay for the DNO to pull the fuse while the electrician does the work. sayi9ng that many electricians do pull the main fuse as its imposible to do safe isolation without.
