Excavating concrete/cement around patio door

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.41 PM

We have discovered parquet floor under the carpet in our living room on the half of the room that was originally part of the house. The other half of the room was an extension and the floor (cement/ concrete) is level with the top of the parquet on the other side. The parquet floor is in reasonably good condition and we would like to restore it on the side of the room where it is present. However, patio doors were added to the room when the room was extended and the parquet stops 20cm before the patio doors - this area has been filled with concrete/cement. Could we excavate this concrete/cement and put parquet there? Would this be likely to cause issues with damp/leaks? Any advice much appreciated! Camilla

The damp proof membrane is likely to be around 300mm beneath the finished floor level, so in answer to your question it is very unlikely that you will compromise and damp course. Yes it should be viable to restore the parquet flooring and add additional where needed.

The answer you have was not a bad one but the depth of the screed and what lay beneath it would depend largely on the age of the property The sensible solution would be to firstly take up a small area of the screed to determine was is underneath, check for any insulation and damp proof membrane, by replacing either or both and adjusting the thickness, it could be possible to accommodate the thickness of the new parquet block, best of luck
