Bricklaying & Repointing

Lintel above bedroom window.

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.21 PM

Could someone please tell me if it would be safe to use HeliFix bars instead of the big job of replacing the Lintel above our bedroom window, 1st floor. There are vertical cracks above the window frame which tells me the Lintel has gone. The inside measurement of the window is 2306mm long. Don't want to get this wrong, I am rather worried.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You can strengthen the courses above using doubled helical bars in the joints but I wouldn't recommend doing away with a lintel. Their not load bearing

If the windows open and shut OK should not be a problem but every possibility lintel could need replacing if incorrect lintel installed it will bow down putting pressure on window it is a big span which will need a heavy load lintel

From being a bricklayer for many years I would change the Lintol ,but if I was worried about the cracks Ide like to see some pictures of the cracks inside and outside the house as you can use helibars which you would cut to the rite size (do not let people join them)

If there is some movement the helical bars may be ok. If the lintel has actually paired then most definitely replace the lintel. That is a wide window to have no lintel support above, and I assume the load of the roof is partly carried by that lintel also.
