Garage Gym: Are wall and ceiling studs strong enough?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.20 PM
I live in a timber framed house and I'm looking to put a gym in the garage. I have a wall mounted squat rack that I'm going to attach to the wall by first attaching two 3m long lengths of 10x4 carcassing timber into the wall studs and will then join the rack to the stringer. Wall is hollow with platerboard attached to the studs. There are nine studs across the 3m piece of wall (they're unevenly spaced!) I also want to attach some 6x4 stringers across three ceiling studs so that I can then attach gym equipment to them that will need to support my body weight (80kg ish). I've done a fair bit of research of other people doing similar things and am planning to use 10mmx100mm coach screws (with a 5mm pilot hole) to attach the stringers to the wall and ceiling. I just wanted to check before I started that this sounds like a sensible plan and that the wall and ceiling studs are strong enough that putting these coach screws into them at various points won't ruin the structural integrity and cause issues. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance for any help.
