How to plant grass seeds in recently deweeded area?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.20 PM

Hi, I have recently cleared an area of my garden where there used to be bushes and weeds. I would like to grow grass in that area. I believe I have to lay down some top soil and then plant grass seeds, but any advice on the best way to do this would be very much apprecaited. Thanks.

Hi Karl, You don't necessarily need additional top soil unless you want to level the area up to existing lawn? You definitely want the existing soil well dug over and raked flat. There are certain brands of seed that come with fertilizer etc, but if not a good amount of bone meal will help. You want a good handful of seed (or two) per meter square and then press the seeds into the soil by walking on them. Sprinkle in with water and keep the area hydrated. They should germinate within a few weeks. All the best Dan

The surface must be prepared by raking or adding soil to give a fine tilth. Add the seed and lightly rake in. It may be worth waiting until temperatures increase for a better germination rate. Ensure any new seed is kept moist once sown as this moisture instigates germination.

I would rake over the cleared area first, then level it out,and use top soil on top,and with rake make some lines in it to put the grass seed over in it
