Removing fresh oil based gloss

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.20 PM

Hi, I’ve painted my children’s bedroom with oil based gloss by mistake (window sills/skirting/door frame) I really want to get rid of it. The smell is really bad and I’m worried about my children breathing in harmful chemicals. Would a non toxic paint stripper work? It’s an old house so an also worried of there possibly be lead based paint somewhere underneath old paint layer. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Flora, No need to strip the paintwork, Just rubdown to a good key and start painting again. James

Hi if you have carpets down they would need to come up, you can get a non toxic stripper but there is still a smell, it is possible to remove just the new paint as the stripper takes paint off layer by layer, once sanded down it would be advisable to give all woodwork a coat of zinsers primer then an Acrylic undercoat and easy flow waterbased gloss. Unfortunately waterbase gloss doesn't have the shine an oil base has but it will dry quick and with no smell. Hope this was helpfull to you.

If you are worried about lead you are best to gently sand the gloss paint you used and then prime it with Zinsser BIN. That will block the fumes from the oil paint and you can use a water-based gloss on top. Non toxic paint strippers are very slow to work and you usually need to do it more than once so it's a bit laborious, and as you said, it could be exposing lead.

Hi the best way to remove oil based gloss is to use a heat gun ,and sand down. Take it back to the wood. Best to take the carpet up first. Hope that helps.
