For a patio, do we need a retaining wall or a drain/ soak (on a sloping hill)?

We are on a slope and want to create patio from the house, maybe 100-150cm out. One tradesman didn't mention a retaining wall but he did do a soak / drain (not sure what it is) with my neighbour's garden. Another tradesman said we needed a retaining wall, made up of railway sleepers. My neighbour said I should level up the garden using cement! I am pretty confused and would appreciate some expert advise. Thanks

Depending how much the gradient is you can install a wall either using sleepers or a brick wall to required height then install the subbase and compact advise the patio needs to be 150mm lower down approximately 2 bricks lower than air bricks or door sill and run the water away from the house into a soak away at the wall end you will get a better draining patio if you can install aco chanel and connect to surface drains if possible kind regards David Kenyon of four seasons landscapes
