Close Board Fence Post Spacing
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.20 PM
I am going to have a bash at erecting a close board fence. Fence will be 10m... what size posts should I use, is 3x3 ok? Also, what distance should there be between fence posts please? Thanks Nick

Hi Nick you should use 4" x4" posts as 3" x 3" posts arent big enough and i always put my posts in at 1800mm or 6ft apart hope this answers your question regards Dave

Hi Nick,
Definitely use 4 x 4" posts at a minimum depth of 2' (old money). If you're erecting a 2m fence, use 9' posts and go down that bit deeper. Standard bay sizes vary depending on location (are you very windy for example?). I wouldn't go more than 2.8m bays; for 10m, 4 posts should suffice. I like to use cant rails - 3 per bay - and any off-cuts to secure the gravel boards. You can go in front of the posts with the rails which is cheaper and easier but you loose that width on your boundary. Finally, if you do opt for large bays, a centre stake to the gravel board helps alleviate any bowing when you come to tack on your feathers.
Hope this helps

I would agree that you should use 4" x 4" posts, I would say that it might be helpful to have the fence panels delivered/on site before setting the distance between the posts. Depending on the panels they could be a slightly different size, it may save you a lot of heart ache if you have set the posts and the panels are 5mm larger, it can happen. Hope that helps.

If you use post and arris rails the centres are 2.4mtrs and then nail on the boards , I would personally buy concrete posts and panels over time they will save you money as wood tends to rot in the ground and then it becomes grief to take out and replace meaning your taking all the fence out . If a panel rots its pulled out and replaced in 5mins and a lot cheaper .
