Bathroom Fitting

What is the cause of a musty wet-cement like smell in the bathroom

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.38 PM

Dear all, I was wondering if you can help. I recently had my ground floor bathroom renovated. The renovation involved replacing the old bath with a new shower cubical with shower of course. However, I have noticed that every time I have a shower, there is a damp musty smell that seems to be emanating from the shower tray. The unpleasant smell reminds me of wet concrete or cement. The bathroom floor has been tiled but prior to the newly tiled floor, the old bathroom floor was vinyl on concrete. Any idea what the issue is and how it can be repaired please? Your advice would be much appreciated. Cheers.

Hello, there could be a number of reasons for it to be honest. Also depending on what type of tray you have will depend on how easy it will be to resolve. It could be foul smell from the svp depending on if the smell is present most if the time or it really is only when you use it, the trap is most likely a waterless trap that should have a hepvo valve fitted to prevent any bad smells travelling back up and there for would smell all the time so from your comments it isn't this but just make sure. So it must be a leak or blocked clogged up trap, do you no how to clean these and how long ago was the work done. If your tray is raised up on legs then you can assess the waste pipe and trap from underneath and check yourself for any damp and leaks using the shower head to flush water out, Also check in the corners were the cubicle is fitted to the walls as if they didn't seal behind the profiles then water can build up and spill out behind the tiles. If nothing present try flushing the trap out with some unblocker as it could be backed up with hair etc and smell when disturbed. There could be more going on but without an visual inspection I would check those out first and go from there. Hope this helps and good luck.

Hello, If it only smells when you use the shower then it may be drain related. A common issue is they forgot to put the bucket in the trap. Cheers TPH
