Drywall straight onto brick?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.38 PM
Hi, I'm renovating a bathroom and a lot of the original lime render and plaster (2 inches thick!) has blown particularly under the window. I've taken about a square foot of it off the wall, but I'm wondering if I should just remove the entire lot back to the brick and drywall straight onto the brick (which is double skin, no cavity) .Can this be done, or does it have to be rerendered and plastered?

Sounds like your house is of an age where the section you have removed will not be the only blown area if I’m honest. From my experience, If you were to dab the boards onto the existing walls as they are you'd run the risk of the adhesive not adhering properly and taking all sides back to the brick work is a lot of effort and also waste away.
I’d suggest drilling and fixing 2”by1” batten all around and then fixing the new green boards to them as this will save you time, money, and effort while ensuring you can achieve a flat finish from a simple skim form a spread. 🤷♂️

I would definitely put a coat of waterproof sand/cement on before applying any plaster board to the walls

i would recommend taking all of the plaster off the wall and dot and dab it, then skim it
