Plaster wasn’t mist coated and paint keeps coming off!

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.38 PM

So it seems that whoever decorated my bathroom before I moved in didn’t mist coat the ceiling. With the steam from the shower the paint keeps coming off. I’ve tried a new extractor, keeping the windows open, and repainting over it, but it still happens. Is there any way to fix it? Would specific bathroom paint help? Or do I need to get the paint off to mist coat it (no idea how to get it all off!)? Any help gratefully received!!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, yes the best bet would be to get it off and mist coat first and then a bathroom paint to finish off. It will be messy to remove the paint quickly but it always works.... make a mist coat and roll on ceiling to make the paint bubble then scrape off. Make sure to empty the room as best as possible and wrap remaining items in plastic and dust sheet floor etc as it's messy but works quickly. Then leave to dry befor mist coating plaster.

Scrape all the loose paint off, then apply one coat of zinsser bulls eye 123, fill all the areas where old paint has been scraped and sand so it’s all smooth, re coat again with bulls eye and then top coat with bathroom paint

After a shower seems your best opportunity to remove any paint that isn't adhered ( bubbling) its quite likely you wont remove all the paint so edges can be filled and smoothed. Look at toupret filler for this. Once all sound, dust free and dry, i wouldn't faff with different primers, paints, bathroom paints, or the expense Use zinsser permawhite, thin the first coat so that it can soak into the plaster and full coat susequent coats. Permawhite is the best paint for bathoom ceilings

It can be a tough job to remove the paint on the ceiling.. Another option is to sand down the peeling paint area.. Then apply a oil based primer/ undercoat or zinzer primer... Leave that a day to dry and then paint over with a good quality emulsion for a matt finish.. The other option is to use a kitchen/ bathroom paint but this gives a shiny finish that many don’t want..

In bathrooms, I've started using an anti condensation paint on the ceilings, this tends to work well with steamy bathrooms. As far as I know it only comes in two colours, white and magnolia, if you like these colours, then I would recommend doing the ceiling and walls in this paint, as it absorbs the moisture, and releases it slowly back into the atmosphere.
