Hi there,
Most tradesmen will ask for a deposit of some kind, whether that is part payment, half, or just to cover particular initial costs.
Please ensure your payments and schedules of works are clearly outlined before going ahead to give yourself some security.

That's a no from me. As I say in my introductions. No money until the work is complete and customer happy with the work. I have total faith in myself and Nicky and his son Harry who is part of the team now. Simon Shukman Town and Country Gardens and property maintenance.

I always ask for a small deposit to book a client for a particular date as in the past have turned down work as thought I already have a job booked only for client to cancel in the last minute meaning I lost two potential jobs.
Would never ask for half the money upfront, only what is needed to purchase materials and then agree a time frame for instalments if job is big and at least 30 - 40% as a final payment on completion of work.
If the job is only for a day or two we just take a initial deposit to book a date and rest on completion of work.

It's not unusual to ask for money upfront, but it really depends on the size of the job, material vs labour cost, how long the project is, and whether its an immediate start or to be scheduled weeks or months in advance in which case a small deposit to hold the job in the contractors schedule is fair.
Typically I would ask for materials to be paid for but only once they're delivered to site.

I never take money up front, sometimes if it’s a large job 30% isn’t unreasonable
But most trades have accounts with builders merchants that give 30days credit so it’s not really needed as such! If you Do? make sure it’s in writing and at what stage of the build for next interim. And always hold the last payment until job is finished to your satisfaction.
