Pebbledash removal in conservation area, London
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.37 PM
Hi, we're planning to remove pebbledash from the front of a traditional terraced 3-bed house in Leyton, London. We want to restore it to the original brick. I just learned that were in a conservation area, and wanted to ask if we will have any problems getting permission from the council with this. I think we in any case have to seek permission from the council. Thank you!

Hi,
As the proposed works are to the front of the house and you are changing the external appearance you would need consent from the Local Authority irrespective of it being a Conservation area.
Regards any potential objections or problems I am afraid it is pretty much down to each planning department or Conversation Officer but I have found planners in Leyton easy to talk to so a call to the Duty Planner will most likely give you some heads up. Also check is to see if any of your immediate or near neighbours have had the same works done as this normally sets a precedent.
Regards the removal of pebbledash - this is not always that successful is respect to revealing / uncovering good quality brickwork or that which is suitable to leave as exposed finish as often the removal of the render can damage the face of the bricks especially if they are soft reds etc. It might be worth doing a discrete sample patch first
Regards
David

Always refer to the council in a conservation area, they will give you all the guidance and advice you need.
