Re-rendering/roughcasting outside walls

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.37 PM

We’ve just had small extension added to bungalow and are now considering how to update the outside walls. As there are quite a few areas requiring to be repaired, coupled with the new extension we thought we should get it all redone. We did quite like the idea of a more contemporary look in white using something like KRend however the plasterer has gone out of his way to put us off it saying that it will be many thousands of pounds and that it stains very easily and when the sun shines on it, it shows up shadowing. He suggested using ordinary roughcast clippings/quartz in white. We’re not sure that the roughcast look is what we’re after. Is there a good alternative to k rend or are there any smaller quartz chippings that don’t look like council housing from the 60’s? Thanks for any advice.

All renders show up a shadow at a certain point, when the sun hits at an angle its like a lazier. Apply a slurry of Sbr mixed with cement 5 parts Sbr to 1 cement, measuring jug, while a meter is wet apply a scratch coat of 4 sand one cement one lime again even measured out, the two will bind together, push webbing into this as you go. This will bind all areas, around the damp course level a piece of roofing batter, sso u can rest the plastic bell cast, oncce u do this with stop beads around inner angles of window, you will have taken most of cost out the. Building, the Sbr will hold back all suction on k _rend, expansions beads to break up areas, and timing your scratch is vital, k rend needs to. Be scratched at same times of day. To ensure colour is same, if day after scratch floating no earlyer than 230 apply, 10.40 is cheapest for k_rend per bag, covering 1.2 meter squared, a good rendering job is pride, best of luck

I would stay away from k rend it doesnt weather well and being a rough textured finish in time it is liable for moss to grow on it depending what part of the country you live why not consider plain faced rendering? if a good spread does it it will certainly last your lifetime

Sorry I disagree not all render shaddowes when its done right a plasterer that's also a renderer will show you how and why traditional render should always be.enhanced with waterproofing simply added to your mortar mix ,,lime mortar renders are much easier to flatten as you have a choice of lime mortar with kiln sand enabling an operative to remove the chance of shadowing ruffles and poor crafts manship as it has different drying times ,in my experience renders should be applied in winter which enables a craftsman to minipilate the surface the next morning with a float and then a sponge ,,BRP Innovations plastering and rendering service checkatrade

Yes shadowing does happen but a good gang would get your bungalow flat so in my opinion it’s just something that your plasterer isn’t confident in using. You could always have a thin coat render which is a very fine stipples top coat in a choice of 150 colours which is very contemporary and again in my opinion my favourite finish. Don’t let him talk you away from what you want if he can’t give you the finish that you want simply find another gang to complete your project there’s some very good rendering companies around
