Driveway blocks chipping

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.37 PM

I recently had my driveway done (block paved) around 4 months ago. And I’ve noticed a few of the blocks have chipped... is this normal? Please help. We used bradstone blocks. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Unfortunately I'm afraid so Rachel; There are sometimes a few rotten apples in the barrel that can chip, if cracked, when frost gets in. Similarly, this can happen when your tradesmen do a final 'whack' with the kiln-dried sand, though you'd hope they would have noticed this. Good news is its very easy to replace a brick and hopefully they'll cover this for you. All the best Dan

this is not normal could be down to a few things...the ground was not brought up and compacted properly so would leave soft spots and the block would come into contact causing chips when drove on or the sand was uneven when whacked which also would leave soft spots and cause the same outcome, another thing could be when it was whacked i like to leave an even blinding of sand just enough for the whacker plate to run on so its not in contacts with the Monoblock saves any chips or cracks.the only other thing it could be that it was not brushed in properly.

Yes there are chipped blocks in the packs & sometimes they chip when being plated. Personally I would never lay a chipped block.. it would be used for cuts & if they chipped when plating I would replace them prior to final sanding. There’s a big difference between a good job & an ok job.. it’s all about the finish.
