Ball Cock Valve of cold water storage tank keeps running

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.59 PM

Dear Tradesman, The ballcock valve of my rather large cold water tank in my loft keeps running in a thin stream. This cannot be stopped even if I push up the ball. Is there a risk of the tank overflowing? How urgent is the issue? Than you very much, Julia

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The ball valve is letting by which means the rubber seal has perished within the valve. It does need changing or mains pressure water will freely flow into the tank leading it to overflow via you’re overflow/warning pipe. If it’s a large tank I assume the supply pipe must also be bigger than normal 15mm supply. The pressure of the flow of water might be greater than it can overflow. My advice would be to change it ASAP. Regards Dan

Your tank should have an overflow pipe fitted to it terminating to safe place. The ball valve will need servicing/replacing as soon as possible.

Replace the ballcock and if there isn’t an overflow then have one fitted
