50mm pvc pipe to cast iron pipe
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.59 PM
Hi, what is the most secure way of connecting a PVC (50mm) pipe to a cast iron pipe.? I’ve recently attended a call out where water was leaking into downstairs. Gutted the floor and found pvc pipe was leaking at joint which meets cast iron. Some plumber had previously repaired it a year ago, the sealant used didn’t feel like CT1, rather standard silicone.... I’ve been using a caulking ferrule, ct1 and special ribbon to stuff the cavity in the past. Is there a better way to ensure a reliable, leak proof long lasting joint ? Many Thanks in advance.

I’ve always used time saver couplings when converting cast to plastic and never had to use a jointing paste or silicone as the rubber sleeve is sufficient with cast clamp around it. In fact any gel like sealant will compromise the joints integrity when tightening the clamp. (Rubber may slip) you can find all sizes online. Try Gutter Centre. Hope this helps.

Hi. Normally to make a repair like this you have to decide what to put on once you have seen the situation, normally you should use a rubber reduction in which there is no need for material such as silicone. I always say that my answer is based only on your message and that it could probably change if when on the spot.

Both pipes are properly connected from one end to the other and the connection is made securely with the inner clamp that is used to cast pipes.
