Electrical

Rewire of 1 bedroom ground floor flat

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.59 PM

Hi, I wanted to know if it is possible to remove trunking (I believe it is called), where the electrical wires have been run along the walls and ceiling then boxed in. I'm guessing a rewiring will have to be done and want to check the possibility of it being done in a ground floor flat. Thank you Additional note in response to the answers received. The floor is concrete I believe but the ceiling isn't. There were problems with the electrics and the council workers felt it was quicker and easier to use trunking.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Walls would need to be chased in for the cables to go into the walls and then plastered over. If the floorboards can be lifted(assuming its not a concrete floor) then that would make it easier to run cables under the floor(for sockets and switches atleast).

Usually there is a reason trunking has been used. Flats often have concrete floors and walls so chasing wiring channels would be impossible. They would have conduit systems cast in when they were built.

The council will almost in all cases use surface mount (trunking ) This makes it quicker to do the work and easy to update in the future. You would need to get the electrics checked including the consumer unit to conform its quality and safty for future use. If you chase the walls ect then you will fing the exsisting cables are going to be to short. If you look at part P regs you can run new cables across the top of the celing and along the the floor / wall. Becarefull when alltering any cables in the roof space as you are sharing this space with the flat above you.
