Cooker plug behind a gas cooker and eye level grill

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.55 PM

My mother currently has a gas cooker with eye level grill. A cooker electrical point is behind the cooker just above the height of the eye level grill. The surround of the socket is fireproof. For the past 50 years there have been numberous gas cookers bought and installed (all gas gas hob and gas eye level grill) in the same place without any problem until now. My mother has bought a replacement gas cooker with eye level grill and it was meant to be installed today. The installers arrived but refused to install it because there was the cooker socket behind and above the cooker. What has changed in the regulations so that a new cooker can not be installed until the socket is moved? The installers may have left without installing the new cooker but there is still the old one there being used. There will potentially be problems moving it as the cooker is in a corner with a window immediately to the other side. Do the same regulations apply to an electric cookers?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

the latest regulations say that the socket must be 900mm minimum from the cooker, having said that there is nothing wrong with the socket located behind the cooker but even that has to have rcd protection, hopethes helps you ,regards Terry.

Hi, is the cooker point obsolete as you are cooking with gas or does it have a13a plug also which you are using for the gas ignition? If its obsolete the most cost efective option is to get your electrician blank it off behind the cooker and disconnect at the consumer unit, then if at a later date it is needed for an electric oven most cabling is still in place BUT it will still need to be relocated at the kitchen end as it sounds like it will be directly above the hob area. Often missed. If the electric cooker point has a plug in socket, then this cannot be in the hotzone above the hotplate or high level grill canopy because the cable that can be plugged into it can be affected by the heat/flame from the burners. If its below the top of the high level grill, then its fine. If it doesnt have a plug on socket and is not classed as a flammable material then its fine Regulations havent changed. There is a big difference in the gas regs for something that is already installed and something that is not yet installed. An installer has to comply with the regs and manufacturers instructions when fitting a new appliance. In addition, waist level cookers with glass lids are no different when it comes to this than waist level cookers without a glass lid. Metal lids different story
