Fused Spur(s) for installing alarm system in a new build

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.58 PM

Hi, I’m in the process of choosing my options for a new build due to be completed in June. I’d like to install a burglar alarm system with wireless sensors after completion as I don’t want the one offered by the builder due to the cost and inflexibility of choosing the system. What electrical work do I need to ask the builder to do at build stage now to ensure that the building is future proofed for installing an alarm at a later date? Is one fused spur in the understairs cupboard (near the front door) enough, or is another fused spur required near the front door for the key panel? I’m imagining that alarms still come as the big control box & separate key pad but I don’t have any previous experience with alarms, so excuse my ignorance! Any advice would be appreciated! Many thanks.

Your best solution is to go for the Pyronix Enforcer [32 Zones] + Wi-Fi for app control. If you wait their new enforcer is out shortly with a blank box and a tablet remote control unit.

Most companies have their preferred system but the enforcer is fairly mediocre. I’d recommend texecom but for the time being you’ll need an Unswitched 3amp fused spur next to where the control panel (the blank metal box that contains the processing gear) position will be. You’ll do yourself a huge favour getting the builder to install an 8 core cable from the keypad position to the control panel, another 8 core cable from the external sounder position to the control panel and a cat5/6 from the network switch/router position to the control panel. This will serve for future proofing anything from any manufacturer you go for. Use an approved installer maintainer - list of companies can be found in SSAIB.org

If you were to go for the pyronix system or something like the Hikvision AX Pro or AJAX systems the control panel is roughly the size of an Ipad and PIRs, Keypads etc will all be wireless so you shouldn't have to do any Additional Electrical work

If you are having a wired system , you only need a fused spur next to main panel, keypad runs off normal 8 core alarm cable.

One fused spur is needed for the main panel. This is the main control panel and is separate from the keypad

Most of the wireless systems as descibed can work off a convenient socket or a fused soure nesr eherecyour going to fit the alarm / keypad.

Pyronix enforcer/visonic etc great wireless options but the keypad/panel will need a link (cat5e) ideally and direct (12v) power etc so if your in the process of building works stage 1 / first fix I'd recommend running data and power (spurs) to every possibility as to future proof you may want the option of a wired system or to link off of it for an AP... if it's a thought just get them in otherwise you may regret it afterwards

A fused spur under the stairs should be more than sufficient for most alarms. Especially if you are considering a small keypad by the front door. That said wireless units are more compact and so these may be fitted by an entrance in which case a fused spur by the front door is appropriate. If you are unsure at this stage of the specifics of an alarm then the vast majority of alarm Installers are able to fit a fused spur when the time comes for installing the alarm
