Will adding solid wall insulation to gable end increase damp issues?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.58 PM
We have end terrace house which looks to be constructed of stone with render finish. Some of render has blown so we need to re-render. We are looking into external wall insulation as opposed to just replacing the render. However as part of damp proof works damp proof membrane was installed internally to the walls. Will installing EWI cause us issues with us having the damp proof membrane installed or will it not matter? Advice gratefully received.

really everthing you have done to this building is wrong so adding insulation will not undo what has already been done, yes it will most likley create dampness issues as what you are doing is sealing everything up and stopping the building breathing, wall insulation is the next big building disaster, old buildings where designed to breathe allow condensation created internally to escape through the wall by sealing them your giving condensation no where to go other than into the plaster creating dampness.
good luck

Well, this will cause you more confusion I guess !
Buildings don’t breathe whatever age they are . If moisture needs to escape the structure , it’s only because it’s entering somewhere else ; that’s the issue that needs dealing with . If you don’t have any water entry issues, external insulation is a brilliant solution to waterproofing the wall and reducing the thermal impact too .
