Temp of electric shower scalding

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.58 PM

Our shower stopped working 3 weeks ago, it turned out to be the electric switch on the roof next to the light. Finally got electrican to come fix it and replace the switch box, told hubby it's working now. Went to take 1st shower and got roasted, the temperature is only freezing or boiling now, despite the sliding gradient dial. We never had to put it more than half way up the cold to get the right temperature. Could the electrician have altered the thermostat? He talked to my husband for half an hour about getting a new shower fitted on a new circuit etc. Showers not even a year old. House only 9 years old. Hate thinking this of someone but could he have altered a thermostat so that we'd have to call him out again and opt for the new unit, circuit and cabling. I as you probably guess don't have a clue.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If it's an instantaneous electric shower there is no thermostat. The water temperature is altered by increasing or decreasing the water flow rate across the heating elements, lower the flow higher the temperature and visa versa. There is a thermal cut out which interrupts the supply to the elements if the temperature exceeds the set safety limit. Check that the water isolator valve is fully open and that the strainer filter is not partially blocked .If there is inadequate water flow the water will heat up to the safety outputs present value which will cause it to operate and this will cause the water to run cold until the cut out resets and the cycle will repeat.

Unlikely to be able to alter sealed thermostat if one exists. Water pressure could be the problem. Too little can make shower run cold or be unpredictable. Or the shower may be fured up with chalky water also could be the problem

Yes he could have totally done that. With new houses the thermostat is set low so you dont scold yourself or children. So the possibility that he turned it up is 99.9%
