Painting marble fire surround

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.39 PM

We have recently moved into a new property and have a really nice marble fire place but the other half thinks it is the wrong colour. We still use the fire but want to know the best way for repainting the fireplace if it is possible and if people have done it before where the results worth it ? Thanks

I have painted a couple of marble fire places using acid 8 etch primer as a first coat and then under coat and top coat with oil based paint to finish . I have found etch primer very useful for painting smooth surfaces as it literally etches into the surface and provides an excellent key for undercoat and top coat to cling to ..Dont forget to sand between coats and sand the marble before primer for a smooth finish.

Iv been a Painter and Decorator for 25 years, over this time i look for new coating systems for projects just like yours, a nice fireplace you want to change but not destroy, take a look at www.plastidip.co.uk they have a number of removable coating systems that you can just peel off or dip over, youtube search will give a good how- to guide. over the years i have painted classic cars with the sprays to furniture they are cheap and good.

Nope, don’t agree? I suggest a Zinsser Bulls Eye primer.., Then paint with yr own choice of colour and finish.. Apply both with a mini roller and brush. Don’t skimp on the roller, cheap ones leave air bubbles.. a soft medium pile is what I recommend. Acrylic eggshell will adhere perfectly as a next coat. If you wish to wipe down, clean? Top coat in a flat Matt water based Decorators Varnish.. Good luck
