Gas Works

Gas compliance certificate

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.39 PM

Hi all, Hope all is well. We had our boiler replaced by a builder who we have known for a while. Everything is working fine and it has a gas safety certificate issued. The problem arises while we try to finish the last bit of building control to realize that he is not Gas safe registered as he was not able to issue an installation or compliance certificate. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your inputs.

its been installed by someone not on the gas safe register then unfortunately you have been done by a cowboy builder. A gas safe engineer MIGHT come out and commission it providing its gas tight and meets ALL manufacturers instructions requirements for installations including clearances, placement, flue etc. I would say expect to play £400-500, as at the end of the day the engineer who signs it off has put their name to it as the person who installed it for the next decade that it's in, they will need to sign it off and take the time to do every test that the cowboy wouldn't have. If its found to be installed in such a way that would void the warranty then I would expect to be charged accordingly to fix

Quite simply you must start by safeguarding yourself. If the installer was not registered at the time of installation then you have no idea if the installation is safe or not, no commission certificate, gas safety certificate or compliance cert from building control. If there was an incident with the appliance or the pipework, your building insurance would unlikely pay up either. I would not recommend using the appliance until it is checked and tested, in fact I wouldn’t even want the gas supply turned on to it. In the first instance you will need to get a registered business out who are willing to inspect and test the installation for compliance and safety against the current British Standrads, The Manufacturer’s installation instructions and Local Building Regs, advise of any alterations needed (if any) and commission the installation, sign off the benchmark, register the warranty, and then submit via gas safe register to Building Control for certification. Only a gas safe registered engineer or business can do this. You may get a competitive quote using MyBuilder because only engineers willing to do the work will respond the others will steer clear. Some businesses I am sure would happily take care of your boiler for its term .. always good to have the same business or person doing the annual service. I hope this offers suitable guidance to protect yourself

Stop using the appliance immediately and report the builder who trust me is not a friend as he could have put your life at risk to the gas safe register . I’d also report anyone who considers signing it off on their behalf.
