Rendering 2 meter garden wall. Does it need two coats of render or one is enough?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.39 PM
I met the plasterer who I want to render my outside wall. He said he will be using premixed render for the job. What I was surprised about is that he has asked me to clean the walls for him. Also there was a comment that he will only put one coat render. Is that correct. I thought all walls are cleaned and need two coats of render, a scratch coat and a top coat. I am concerned. I wonder why he asked me to make sure I have removed all the moss etc which is on the wall? Please advice. Thank you

Hi Jossi,
If your garden wall is just brickwork / blockwork then it needs 2 coats / scratch and topcoat, If its already rendered then providing that render is sound then you may get away with just a premixed one coat render, but I would still grind it up for a key for the topcoat. The plasterer may have asked you to clean the wall to save him time ( if your applying a biocide you should wait 24 hours for it to work and kill the moss and spores ) before any render is applied.

My thoughts are that yes, you are right, as contractors we always two coat render, unless requested and specified
I may sound cynical and I could be wrong, but it sounds to me, like he could be asking you to remove the existing etc, because that way, if his render cracks or blows, he could blame you for not removing it properly
I would just ask the questions why
There may be genuine reasons

Usually if you use sand and cement to render walls it needs two coats but the new render ocr bought in bags you can get the thickness in one coat as long as wall is prepared proply you definitely need walls cleaned off so render gets. a proper key. and doesn't reaper behind render
