Planning permission to level garden & fence height
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.39 PM
Once our garden is levelled, (coming up 200-250mm next to the fence to fill an old flower bed), then the fence in our side will go to being just a 5ft panel, are we OK to add 200mm height of panelling onto top of it? As we are built on a slope (c1975), It will be under 2m on our side, but next door are lower so they have 450mm of gravel board and then fence and top panel above, so in all about 2.15m for them. As it is my fence, does the 2m apply to my side or there side?

6’ is the usual height so you should be ok there. If you are on a new build estate it’s always a good idea to check the covenant but I really don’t see a problem.

Max you can go is 2m high anything higher you would require planning permission

If it's your fence 2m from your side make sure adequate retention is installed and correct length posts used ensuring enough post is below ground from lowest side

Fences can be a maximum of 2m.
From your neighbours side you're saying it would be 2m and 15cm.. that is pretty high! Personally I'd reduce it by 15cm (which really isn't a lot) to be on the safe side. You'll still have a decent height and keep them happy.
If in doubt call your local planning or building control office and ask where the 2m is measured from
