Replacing 2 Way light switches with metal faceplates
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.39 PM
I am replacing all of the light switches in my flat with brushed steel face plates. In the hall way I have 2 switches feeding to the same light. I have replaced the switch by the door and have earthed accordingly however the second switch does not appear to have any earth cable. In the back box there is a COM, L1 & L2 cable. The back box and faceplate are both plastic. Is there anyway to fix a metal face plate without a complete rewire? Thanks!

No. It will require an earth

The earth wire has probably been cut short, try pulling the wire to see if you have slack. It definitely needs an earth though.

Sometimes the earth is cut off in the cable to the switch , you could try peeling back the outside white/grey sheath to see if it’s there and then can be jointed and extended.

You need an electrician to check it. There should be a bare earth (CPC) in the cable. It could be that it has been chopped off, and just a case of stripping some back and connecting it.
Worst case scenario is that the original installer has used the earth as a strapper (L1 or L2) which would need to be rewired.
