Central Heating

Seperate heating & hot water

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.40 PM

Hi, i have enough plumbing knowledge to get by, fix a leaky tap etc....but not enough to answer my question so hopefully somebody on her would be kind enough to help... my old house was great, oil fired central heating....timer had 1 button for the heating, 1 button for the hot water.....so i could set the timer for, hot water only, heating only, or heating and hot water at the same time.... my current house (a newer house) only has the option for, well basically on or off on the timer......i have to put on the radiators to get hot water which takes ages as the rads have to heat first before the hot water storage tank fills.....yes i can put the immersion heater on but we all know that costs a fortune.. so, basically i want to know is it an easy upgrade to change my system to have both seperate hot water and heating again? i believe it is a gravity fed system.....hot water cylinder in hotpress, 1 little tank in loft, 1 big tank.... thanks guys (and girls).

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Sounds like you are a control or two missing. Basically if you have a boiler, pump and diverter valve then any system can be wired to accommodate that. However it seems that something may be missing from the system. Any decent heating engineer will be able to sort it or at least advise you quite quickly on a solution to resolve it.

Possible wired wrong. Normally on a standard system if you just put heating on you will always get a tank of hot water as it’s running for heating.. but hot water only should do hot water only. So valve could be stuck or faulty or controls wired/wrong....Should post some pics of your system.

As Horsham suggested something is a miss. Gravity system are good where mains low pressure is an issue. You may have 1 or 2 zone valves which maybe faulty (Y or S plan) I would strongly suggest you hire a Gas Safe engineer. Afterall it is a bit more than leaky tap :) Hope it helps

Change programmer for Ch and dhw and wire to diverter valves accordingly
