Pinholes on newly plastered wall
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.40 PM
Hi everyone, Before Christmas, I had a damp proof course installed, and so the wall is newly plastered. We waited over a month for the wall to dry out before applying a mist-coat of watered down emulsion. We've since done two coats of white and now tiny pinholes are appearing. Can I just pop filler in these? or should I use a tiny paint brush to drop extra bits of paint in? (seen both suggested online!) Interestingly, the pinholes are only appearing on the join line where the new plaster reached. Many thanks in advance, Michelle

Hi Michelle!
If the pin holes are small enough for the paint to fill do that, or if not, pop in some light-weight filler, which will be quick to use, or ordinary filler if you already have it and sand back with 120 or 240 grit sand paper when dry. Filler soaks up the paint, so spot paint over the filler patches when they are dry first, let that dry and then paint the whole wall after.
Hope that helps!

Sounds like those areas had too much suction for the paint that was used. Contrary to what many say, here and across the web, a mist coat does not 'seal' new plaster. I always dilute the first coat of finishing emulsion.
Yes you can fill over the paint but not with any filler
Needs to be a filler that is specified for adhesion to painted surfaces and be easy to lightly sand. There is no better filler for this than toupret fine surface filler. Work it into the pin holes but try to finish with as thin a coating as you can. Use a thin wide flexible blade
